It is very easy to customize the layout of the toolbars in Thunderbird. To add/remove buttons or change the placement of buttons on a toolbar, go to the View menu and select Toolbars > Customize or, alternatively, right-click on the toolbar and select Customize. Then simply drag the buttons to where you want them to be.
