The article was explicitly written for Thunderbird and is mail-centric though it could be made more generic.  However, I am not a fan of articles that try to support every Mozilla application. In my experience that usually means Thunderbird gets the short end of the stick and there are quality problems.  If somebody writes a similar article for Firefox I'll rename this article.
