Background

Other applications will often use the system’s default browser to load web pages. When a Mozilla-based browser is running, it can catch links sent by other programs. This preference determines how Mozilla handles those links.

Note: This preference was removed in Firefox 3.5. [1]

Possible values and their effects

1

Open links from external programs in the current window.

2

Open links from external programs in a new window. (Default in SeaMonkey)

3

Open links from external programs in new tabs in an existing window. (Default in Firefox)

UI

Firefox 2 and 3.0.x

Radio buttons labeled “a new window” and “a new tab” are located under “Tools → Options → Tabs → New pages should be opened in:” and toggle between 2 and 3, respectively. Note that the same UI will concurrently toggle the browser.link.open_newwindow preference settings to the same values.

Firefox 1.5

Radio buttons labeled “a new window”, “a new tab in the most recent window”, and “the most recent tab/window” are located under “Tools → Options → Tabs → Open links from other applications in:” and toggle between 2, 3, and 1, respectively.

Firefox 1.0.x

Radio buttons labeled “a new window”, “a new tab in the most recent window”, and “the most recent tab/window” are located under “Tools → Options → Advanced → Tabbed Browsing → Open links from other applications in:” and toggle between 2, 3, and 1, respectively.

SeaMonkey

Radio buttons labeled “The current tab/window“, “A new tab in the current window“ and “A new window“ are located under “Edit → Preferences → Navigator → Tabbed browsing / Links from other applications → Open links passed from another applications in” and toggle between 1, 3, and 2, respectively.
