Talk:Moving address books between profiles

With Mozilla 1.7 and Thunderbird, I had the same or similar problem as the users below. When I imported an address book, it became merely another auxiliary address book; not the "Personal Address Book" of the Mozilla email client. While there surely must be a standard, user-friendly way to designate an imported address book as the "Personal Address Book", I couldn't find it.

So here's the way I import an address book so that it becomes Mozilla's default Personal Address Book ("PAB" for short). The crux of this is that you rename an imported address book's file name to be "abook.mab". Note that this is NOT a "merge" of the current PAB with a new address book: The new address book "replaces" the current PAB.

1) Export the address book that you want to be the new PAB, and call it something like "goodAddressBook". 2) Import the "goodAddressBook" into Mozilla. 3) Using the file search utility of your choice, find Mozilla's current address book file, which is called "abook.mab". Ensure that Mozilla is not running, and then rename "abook.mab" to something else, like "oldbook.mab". You rename it instead of deleting it in case you have to revert. 4) Find your imported address book, which will be called something like "impab.mab", and will be in the same directory as "abook.mab", and rename it "abook.mab". 5) Restart Mozilla / Thunderbird mail, and you should now see your imported address file as your Personal Address Book.

Again, let me emphasize that this is likely the hard way to do this. I invite others to supply the "easy, standard way" to do this!

I 1) too am missing something, how do I combine my imported address books? Maybe I'm missing something in this explanation. But so far when importing address books as indicated in there, I've not found a way to merge the imported addresses into my existing Personal Address Book but find it adds a new iteration titled similar to the file name to my list of address books. Any hints on merging the import list into the Personal Address Book? _______________________________________________________________________

Thats realy weird, I can edit some one elses message!! Merging. Tools - export. Then on new account Tools Import ?

Same problem. Thunderbird does not seem to offer a means of directing/selecting the destination of the imported address book data. Importing a new address book file results in a new separate book. I could not find a way to merge the imported books data with my existing 'Personal Address Book', nor could I copy all entries to my clipboard from the new book and past it into my existing book.

YES - I concurr. Despite claims to the contrary, I cannot import an address book into the "profile" of my choice. Creating a new, separtate address book is useless - I cannot use it as a group mailing list.

My problems arose when I first switched from the absolutely awful email client "Outlook" to Mozilla Thunderbird. Selecting Thunderbird as my default email client, it automatically imported the address books from outlook, which is great. However, the idiot office admin. person (who was recently fired and replaced by me) who originally set up the email lists in outlook, created her mass email lists in the 'personal' book/folder, instead of group/collected lists book/folder. So, when I installed Mozilla as my email client, the group list was set up in the personal address book.

I have not been able to email this group list (I get an error message: sorry, server responded: no mailbox by that name(#5.1.1 chkuser) - verify address is correct in mail preferences). I combed the list for any weird or incomplete email addresses and found none; called our online service provider and was rebuffed; and tried copying and pasting the list (which you can't do) into excel, and other tricks, none of which have worked. Then I exported the list as an .ldif (from Mozilla), and then imported it into the (selected/highlighted) "collected addresses book" (back into Mozilla), only to find that didn't work as planned.

I am not IT savvy, I'm only an office administrator for a small non-profit. All I'm trying to do is my job, which involves mailing out our online newsletter to a group list. The natives are growing restless - would somebody PLEASE HELP ME, and advise. Thank you!

Migrating Groups from OE to TB

I am having enormous difficulty in finding an extension that will serve these needs. It appears that the groups will have to be manually reorganized from the personal address folder. Once that is done then that identity should be all set. What happens when you want to migrate that ldf file? Backup? share? etc. Can someone please write a fix???
