unused disk space
Is disk health discussed in a different kb article? If not, the topic is hardly superfluous. I've come across numerous people whose performance issues were severe, and the cause was not thunderbird but simply that they consistently run disk space into the toilet:
- consistently keep their disk space below 15%, 10%, etc
- go through binge/purge cycle of approaching 0% free, then delete of ton of stuff to free up space, then repeat the cycle
The result is disk defrag is either never effective, and their disk is heavily fragmented
And we also have users who never run defrag.

- Fine. I restored it as part of "routine usage", and suggested they move the profile to another drive if they keep running short of disk space. I want to keep it really short though. Tanstaafl 22:26, 21 October 2011 (UTC)

Compact Folders when it will save
In version 3.3 the default is changing to 1MB via bug 437657. kb article should probably also specify the same minimum. Additionally, I don't understand the rationale for suggesting the value be "low". Can someone explain how that helps performance? (given that compacts can be costly) Wsm 22:08, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
- I disagree. One of the most serious and frequent problems we see in the forums is corrupt folders due to not compacting often enough. Right or wrong, we (typically) advocate compacting often (i.e. automate it and use low values) in the forums in order to minimize the perceived delay due to compacting, and to reduce the risk of corruption. We shouldn't change that just because the company changes the default. Tanstaafl 09:38, 1 March 2011 (UTC)

In the process of tidying up this article (fixing links etc.), I shortened the paragraph about compacting folders, replaced the reference to mail.purge_threshhold with other text, and added a link at the end to Compacting folders in order to "keep things simple" and make it easier for new users to read. If instructions on how to install an extension in TB really need to be in this article, they might go better in the paragraph about extensions. --wintogreen 11:36, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
Unclear whether old users that have not experienced problems should also change the "default" profile name and/or whether they should make a new profile.
Unclear whether "child folder" is the same as a subfolder and whether "child folder in Local Folders" means a subfolder under the main folder called "Local folders" or a subfolder in the folder called "Inbox" in Local Folders. --American Finn 08:50, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

This section starts by saying,
Don't use the "default" profile name. Thunderbird has a nasty habit of once in a great while forgetting about the existence of a profile if it uses the default name. When this occurs you suddenly start up in the new account manager. You can avoid this by creating your profile with the Profile Manager and choosing a unique name.
