Do we really want to get into all this? Do we want to tell people how to get IE7 and how to get help for it? Much of this article actually provides support for IE, and it's not necessarily correct. For one thing, there is an MS bulletin that says IE7 can nuke IE6 unless you utter some magic incantations, whereas this article says you just uninstall IE7. I don't really know how to slice it and dice it, but I sure don't want to spend time finding out either.

If we support or attack IE, we also have some obligation to make sure it's right. We might not want to go too far with claims about the relative performance of IE and Fx. Is Fx simpler and more efficient? Darned if I know. Some say IE is smaller and faster. Do we include that information too? I would suggest that the article be confined to information relevant to migration, and maybe encouraging people not to uninstall IE. --AnotherGuest.

For one thing, there is an MS bulletin that says IE7 can nuke IE6 unless you utter some magic incantations, whereas this article says you just uninstall IE7. I don't really know how to slice it and dice it, but I sure don't want to spend time finding out either. I did spend some time researching this. The IE7 stuff was added because people wanted to know how they could remove IE7. See this forum topic, for example, which links to this article. The removal instructions and the Release Notes for Internet Explorer 7 should hopefully help people remove IE7 and get back to IE6. By the way, thanks for bringing this up since the article needed to be updated... IE7 is no longer in "Beta" as RC1 is out. I also updated the Microsoft support reference link which includes the uninstall instructions. Alice Wyman 12:04, 12 September 2006 (UTC)
I would suggest that the article be confined to information relevant to migration, and maybe encouraging people not to uninstall IE. Sorry, I didn't reply to that. We are already encouraging people not to uninstall IE and instead, simply not using IE (by choosing Mozilla as the default browser, making IE more secure or hiding IE. I guess we could remove the information about reinstalling or repairing IE6 and we could also add a link to Import_bookmarks#From_Internet_Explorer (be my guest) ... but I would leave the information about removing IE7 because lots of people ask about that. Does IE7 affect Mozilla products? If not, we can just refer them to MozillaZine Tech or MS for removal instructions. --AnotherGuest.
People were reporting problems with IE7 Beta and Firefox which may or may not be fixed by updating to IE7 RC1. See this forum topic and this one, which I just found just now with a forum search (There are lots of other topics about IE7). Alice Wyman 16:22, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

I'm considering updating the instructions for IE8 and Windows 7. It sounds like we should ideally link to a reliable external site that explains the importance of installing the latest software (including OS components, plugins, drivers, browsers), turning on data execution prevention (DEP) system-wide, turning on Protected Mode in IE, and using High Security for all zones in IE. I'll try to find one site that contains all this information, but if I cannot, I'll list individual pieces of advice and link to separate sites. I'm planning on encouraging all Windows users to upgrade to IE8, as that has been the advice given recently by numerous sources, so I'll remove the information about IE7. I will retain information about Windows XP and Vista. -- schapel 20:33, 2 February 2010 (UTC)
