I noticed you've been cramming about:config entries each into their own seperate article. I'd like to help out. Do you have any pointers on how you're coming up with the info for those pages?--Np 11:02, 17 November 2005 (PST)
:I'd love the help. I have an article outline that I've been following for writing the articles (you may have already seen it).

:When I research a preference for an article, I usually start with a LXR search for the preference name. Turning on CVS blame on individual file listings will give interesting information, often including a bug # for relevant blocks of code. If the line with the pref in it was revised since its initial checkin, you can switch over to the Bonsai CVS checkin page for the file and look back to find which version introduced it.

:The only tricky preferences are the ones that have been introduced on branches (e.g. the Find Bar prefs on Aviary), as you sometimes have to play with Bonsai a bit before finding the actual checkin date, and ancient preferences (e.g. advanced.mailftp) that have existed since the dawn of time.

:Between CVS comments, bug comments, source code comments, and good-old-fashioned experimentation, there's usually enough information to put together a comprehensive article. Failing that, there's always Google.

:I don't really have a system for adding new articles yet. I started out with the top of the About:config entries and got bored, and started doing articles as I saw preferences mentioned in the forums. --Unarmed 12:20, 17 November 2005 (PST)
::Do you have any system for when you add the links to about:config Entries? I've noticed that some preferences have articles but aren't linked.--Np 14:05, 17 November 2005 (PST)
:::Yeah - "when I remember." :) --Unarmed 17:21, 17 November 2005 (PST)
::Wanna put all the info on how you gather the info in Category_talk:Preferences so it's easier to find? --Np 19:07, 24 November 2005 (PST)
:::Good idea. I've added a description of tracking down information. --Unarmed 20:28, 24 November 2005 (PST)

The new "Knowledge Base changes" article
Hi!

As a regular contributor to the Knowledge Base, I thought you'd like to know about a new page I've created: Knowledge Base changes. The purpose of the page is explained in that article, but in summary I think it would be a good central place for existing editors to discuss potentially controversial changes to the KB, and for new editors to propose changes before implementing them.  Any feedback will be gratefully received on the talk page for that article, or on my user talk page!

Best wishes, --Mozcerize 13:02, 2 January 2006 (UTC)

Template or "Guide" for Preference pages? (Copied from  a discussion on Np's Talk page)
Np,  This is a continuation of the topic you began on my Talk page (my editing of the Browser.cache.memory.capacity page, which I moved to the talk page for that article for my reply).  Regarding the portion of my reply asking about an existing "template" or guide to writing preference pages,  I couldn't find one written up anywhere,  so I looked through a number of preference pages for patterns and found the following sections you've been using in pages in the :Category:Preferences:
<snip>
I thought that I probably should ask this question on the new  Knowledge_Base_changes page (or elsewhere)  but before doing that  I thought I would ask you first.  Is this the standard way to write preference pages (and, if so, is there a written guide or template  anywhere) or is it just your preference?  (No pun intended!)

:Category_talk:Preferences--Np 18:37, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
::It  never occurred to me to look on a Talk page for article-writing guidelines (I would think that anything on a "Talk" page is "informal").  I'd suggest formalizing those "guidelines" for anyone wanting to write a new preferences page.  I'm asking because I was thinking to write one for "browser.bookmarks.file" since it is a common question on the forum but I think I'll pass and limit myself to articles in other categories since the market seems to be cornered  on  preference articles .  Alice Wyman 18:54, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
:::It was User:Unarmed who started the category, try talking to him.--Np 18:58, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
::::Thanks, I'll just copy all of this to his Talk page then. Alice Wyman 19:15, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
:::::Did you have a particular place in mind to put the pref article information? I'd be happy to clean it up and put it somewhere more obvious. And feel free to write any preference articles you like, they can always be tweaked. --Unarmed 01:48, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
::::::Hi, thanks for answering.  I'm assuming you want people to follow a certain format in a category like Preferences since that's the impression I got from Np.  If that's the case,  you should  link to an article explaining what you want followed in Rules or In-house style.  I'm not sure where you would place an article like that but I would guess somewhere in :Category:MozillaZine_Knowledge_Base_organization.  And, thanks for the encouragement to write preference articles with the idea that they can be tweaked later.  Alice Wyman 02:50, 6 January 2006 (UTC)

::::::OK I added a new page, browser.bookmarks.file Alice Wyman 04:10, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
