1. For Windows XP/2003: Right click on thunderbird.exe or a Thunderbird shortcut and select "Properties". Select the "Compatability" tab and run thunderbird in compatability mode for "Windows 98 / ME".  However, this may cause links sent to external applications (such as Firefox) to not function correctly as forward-slashes may be converted to back-slashes, making the URL invalid.

# Assume its not hardware related. If the problem occurs for a POP account increase the [[Modify_Thunderbird_settings | POP3 timeout]] to 180 seconds. If that doesn't help or the problem was with a IMAP account try increasing mailnews.tcptimeout to 120 seconds in Thunderbird's [[about:config]].

This article was written for Thunderbird but also applies to Mozilla Suite

Thunderbird 1.0.7 doesn't appear to have any problems running on a dual core CPU such as a AMD Athlon 64 X2 , Intel Pentium D or Intel Pentium Extreme Edition. Thunderbird 1.5, however, has a bug where your connection may occasionally timeout if you're using a dual core CPU.

  1. For Windows XP/2003: Right-click on thunderbird.exe or a Thunderbird shortcut and select "Properties". Select the "Compatability" tab and run Thunderbird in compatability mode for "Windows 98 / ME". However, this may cause links sent to external applications (such as Firefox) to not function correctly as forward-slashes may be converted to back-slashes, making the URL invalid.
  2. Assume its not hardware related. If the problem occurs for a POP account increase the POP3 timeout to 180 seconds. If that doesn't help or the problem was with a IMAP account try increasing mailnews.tcptimeout to 120 seconds in Thunderbird's about:config.
  3. Download imagecfg.exe and read the instructions on that web site on how to permanently bind a application to one core (run Thunderbird on only one of the cores). Supposedly that tool is also available from the Windows 2000 or Windows XP Server Resource Kit.

Another possible workaround is to modify the "Boot.ini" file to use the /usepmtimer switch.
