because: Download error
I, too, can't install any extensions or themes. I get the "because: download error" message on firefox 1.0.2 on win XP. It did work at some time in the past as I managed to install a couple of extensions. This is on my laptop; on my desktop machine (same version/OS), it works fine.
- This is wrong place for asking questions, but that error message is often caused by disk cache set to 0. [1] --asqueella
staged-xpi
I had a problem where all the sudden no extensions were installing. I would get the dialog box confirming that I wanted to install some extension and after choosing install, nothing would happen. The extension wouldn't show up in the list of extensions, the extensions.rdf file wasn't being modified. I noticed an unusual folder: staged-xpi (under $profileFolder/extensions) and I deleted all of its contents (an extension I was trying to install was listed several times in there). That seemed to take care of it.
- Thanks for reporting this. I found a related bugzilla report and added it to the article. Alice Wyman 02:05, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
better URL
The URL of this and other KB pages ending in a parenthesis should be changed because they are transmitted as a link without the last parenthesis in emails. I.e. the parenthesis is there but not part of the link.
- This was recently discussed here Alice Wyman 02:05, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, but i'm having trouble understanding that discussion and what the outcome was, or if there is one.
- Could we at least get a redirect from Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions_(Firefox to one of these?: Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions_(Firefox) or Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions_(Firefox%29 --American Finn 03:56, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
- I created a redirect from Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions_(Firefox plus three more, for the three Standard diagnostic articles that end in parentheses. Alice Wyman 19:13, 3 May 2006 (UTC)
Better Organization
Download issues strikes me as the wrong in that the first thing contained in it really isn't a download issue. I think both of these should be top level categories although not sure where to put them. There are probably a few other things that could be organized a little better. I'll probably take a look at it later, but wouldn't mind sketching out how people think it should be organized before hacking on it.--Majken 18:25, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
- Some sites may give "download" instructions for extensions and users get confused as to what to do with the XPI or JAR file after downloading, which is why I categorized it as a "download" issue. I placed the -228 error under that heading to preserve the TOC numbering, based on user request (headings #7 and #8 are often referred by number, I was told). However, since the headings have descriptive titles, it's probably not as important to preserve the TOC numbering if the article can be better organized. As I see it, though, the article is fine as-is, but I guess there is always room for improvement. Anyway, now you have the background. Alice Wyman 21:30, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
Invalid file hash
Invalid hash was removed because it's a server-side issue that's been fixed, according to bug 345505.--Np 15:20, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
- According to the bug activity report that bug was"fixed" once before (2006-08-10) then reopened (2006-08-14) then marked fixed again just recently (2007-04-24). I suppose you can remove it since we now have the issue documented here in discussion, in case the issue resurfaces, or just leave the entry, I don't care. Alice 16:20, 23 May 2007 (UTC)
- The "Invalid file hash" issue has apparently resurfaced according to this SUMO forum post so I added back the section. Alice 15:50, 22 December 2007 (UTC)
Thunderbird , Mozilla Suite and SeaMonkey (and Sunbird)
I can't find similar articles for Thunderbird, Mozilla Suite and SeaMonkey. Somebody just ran into a -203 install error with Thunderbird and most of the errors in the article seem applicable to other Mozilla applications. [2]
Most of the text other than the Incorrect user agent and Allowing the site to install sections seems to apply to Thunderbird. Having to deal with Firefox 1.5, Firefox 2, Firefox 3, Thunderbird 2, Thunderbird 3, and SeaMonkey 2 specific paragraphs in the article might make the article hard to read.
Should I create a similar article for Thunderbird? I don't mind doing that but would like to understand why the original article was made Firefox specific. I would have expected it to also cover Mozilla Suite and SeaMonkey. Tanstaafl 18:54, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- Im guessing the original article was Firefox-specific because it didn't apply to Mozilla Suite and the writer didn't consider Thunderbird extensions. The Firefox 1.5 stuff could be removed but go ahead and create a new "- Thunderbird" article without the browser-related content. I was thinking that this article might eventually be renamed "Unable to install themes or extensions" and updated for SeaMonkey 2 (along the lines of the Toolbar customization - Firefox article which was renamed Toolbar customization and links to the related Thunderbird article) . - The Extension Manager is part of the Toolkit code, which is common to (at least) Firefox, Thunderbird, Sunbird and SeaMonkey 2 (but not SeaMonkey 1.x) nowadays. Of course, Firefox and SeaMonkey can install extensions by clicking a link in the browser, while for Thunderbird and Sunbird you have to download the extension by means of another app, then use the "Install" button in the Extension Manager. --Tony 16:17, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
Renamed article
I renamed the article to remove " - Firefox" from the title and added the SeaMonkey category. Alice 10:18, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
