Splitting up this article

I should probably make two articles by spinning off the first section to a new article on starting Mozilla applications with a specified profile, since that section also applies SeaMonkey and Mozilla Suite. The "Bypassing the Profile Manager" and "Creating an unlisted profile" sections would then be a separate article, since Mozilla Suite and SeaMonkey 1.x do not support the -profile <path> argument . I think you are making things too complex, and too pigeon holed. Its useful to lump all of the different ways to spawn an application with a specified profile in one article. While I understand that the majority of our users are windows users you're short changing OSX and Linux users by creating a Windows specific article when there was no real reason to be operating system specific. Are you assuming they're going to read the windows specific article, or are you going to spin off more? If the former, what was gained?

I don't see the harm in making this article generic, and mentioning that certain sections don't apply to SeaMonkey/Mozilla suite. While its good to add explicit support for SeaMonkey in articles given the relative popularity of the different applications fragmenting the article mainly to make it a little cleaner for SeaMonkey seems unnecessarily disruptive.

Its not clear why different assumptions are made about the path in the desktop shortcut and run dialog sections, while the "Creating an unlisted profile" doesn't deal with path issues at all. I suggest the "Creating an unlisted profile" section be renamed to make it clearer that the real intent is to specify a profile without relying upon the profile manager. i.e. the focus should be on troubleshooting , not hiding footprints.

Profile_Manager has a "Shortcut to a specific profile" section. I think it should stay, despite the duplication with "desktop shortcut". However, looking at this articles "run dialog" section, it makes me wonder why spawning the profile manager and choosing the profile from the list was ignored. This yet another reason why I'd prefer to have one article that lists the different ways to start an application with a specific profile. Adding some text for it, plus a image would add value. I don't see the value in a separate Windows shortcut to a specific profile article, especially since its misnamed. Using the run dialog has nothing to do with shortcuts. I guess I totally misunderstood your suggestion to make this article more generic (which you suggested on Talk:Roaming profiles - SeaMonkey ). I thought you wanted an article that applied to other Mozilla applications (specifically, SeaMonkey) which is why I spun off the new article. I did some editing to fix this article up to get back some of what I took away and to leave it open for information about Linux or Mac. If you want to restore some more of what I removed from this article, to make it less fragmented, or add information for Linux or Mac users feel free. Alice 15:55, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

I renamed the new article I spun off to Shortcut to a specific profile and added a screenshot for the Windows desktop shortcut instructions and tried to simplify the instructions. The new article is basically about creating a Windows desktop shortcut since I don't know how to create a Linux or Mac desktop shortcut (although I do have limited experience using the Mac Terminal utility fo create a new profile on hubby's Ibook). I left the article open to add that information. Feel free to add to or edit it. Alice 15:55, 23 December 2007 (UTC)
