I have tried this with Thunderbird 1.5 and cannot get it to work. i.e close thunderbird down. created a folder "test" i the profile folder and moved one of my address books into it (abook_1.wab). Then ammended the pref.js as described. Started thunderbird again. The address book just dissapeared. Undoing the changes restored the adress book.
