Talk:Phishing protection

The junk mail controls are used to detect spam, not phishing. While real phishing might occur most often in spam messages, they are different problems, and most of the complaints we get about phishing are for false positives in non-spam messages.

In Thunderbird tools -> options -> security -> "email scams" controls whether it tries to detect phishing. Its useful to keep the link to the junk mail controls, though it should be made clear thats not an article on phishing protection. I suggest you add one or two paragraphs describing what the anti-phishing in Thunderbird actually checks, and recommend that it be disabled because it can't learn or be whitelisted. Agreed, I can probably recycle some text from Thunderbird 5.0 - New Features and Changes#Scam_warning to expand on the scam (semi-)feature. Yes, many phishing attempts are hopefully caught by spam filters, not necessarily Thunderbird itself based on the primitive rule set used for the scam detector and the fact that junk-mail controls need to be properly trained. My initial motivation for the Phishing protection article was that searching for this established term didn't give a good response, and that it's ambiguous with respect to which article to read, depending on browser vs. e-mail context. --Rsx11m 14:52, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
