| Tabs are a clever way of presenting more than one web page in a single browser window. Although a common feature in many web browsers, it will be new to former Internet Explorer users. They work in a similar way to the applications that appear on the Windows Task bar or MacOS Dock whilst running, but by having them based entirely within the browser it can help you keep your virtual workspace tidier. You should note that using tabs is entirely optional, but do try it as it could revolutionise the way you work.

| While most useful tab functions can be added using small extensions from [http://extensionroom.mozdev.org/ Extension Room], some people prefer to use [http://white.sakura.ne.jp/~piro/xul/_tabextensions.html.en Tabbrowser Extensions] (or "TBE"), a gigantic extension that changes some core browser files (and is thus not recommended by the Firefox developers, despite its popularity). It is very powerful, adding just about everything you could want with tabs (plus a whole lot more). However, due to its size, most users report that this extension slows down the browser somewhat and it is advised that you look for the functionality you want in [[Firefox : Tips : Extensions That Replace TBE | smaller, faster extensions first]].
