This article applies to Thunderbird and Mozilla Mail (the mail component of Mozilla Suite).

Thunderbird or Mozilla Mail can display a designated Start Page in the preview pane when starting up.

Turning off the Start Page display

In Thunderbird: go to "Tools -> Options -> General", and then in the section labelled "Thunderbird Start Page" uncheck the box for "When Thunderbird launches, show the Start Page in the message area."

In Mozilla Suite: go to "Edit -> Preferences -> Mail & Newsgroups", and then in the section labelled "Mail Start Page" uncheck the box for "When Mail launches, show the Start Page in the message area."

Changing the Start Page

Instead of displaying the default Start Page, you can instead have Thunderbird or Mozilla Suite display your own custom-made start page, such as an HTML file or JPG image.

In Thunderbird: go to "Tools -> Options -> General" and check the box for "When Thunderbird launches, show the Start Page in the message area." Then, in the "Location" box, enter the correct location for the file you want to use as the Start Page.

In Mozilla Suite: go to "Edit -> Preferences -> Mail & Newsgroups" and check the box for "When Mail launches, show the Start Page in the message area." Then, in the "Location" box, enter the correct location for the file you want to use as the Start Page.

Important: it is crucial that you correctly specify the location of the file you want to use for the Start Page, and the syntax may be different from what you are familiar with. For instance, in Windows, if your Start Page file is located at C:\Backgrounds\StartPage.jpg, you need to enter this in the "Location" box as file:///C:/Backgrounds/StartPage.jpg. You should be able to get the correct syntax for the file location by opening the file in Firefox (or Navigator in Mozilla Suite) and then copying the file location from the Location Bar.
