|-
|Many web sites generate a continuous stream of new articles. For example, Yahoo News.
|-
|While you can always visit Yahoo News to see the latest articles, it's sometimes more convenient to have new stories sent to you automatically. Traditionally this has been done via email.
|-
|'''RSS is a new way to automatically get just the latest info you care about''', whether its new headlines from Yahoo's Business section, or the latest entries from your favorite blogs.
|- style="font-size: large; color=red;"
|What does RSS stand for?
|-
|RSS originally stood for Rich Site Summary. But it makes a bit more sense if you think of it as Really Simple Syndication, a way for web sites to syndicate content.

|Some '''search engines''' are getting in on the RSS act too.
|-
|Traditionally search engines listed results right in your browser in direct response to you initiating a search. More recently they've begun allowing you to '''store a search''' forever and have it repeatedly initiated, say once an hour, and the '''latest results sent to you''', automatically via email.
|-
|Now, with RSS, they can continually write results to your very own RSS stream so you get near instant notification of the latest web pages, news headlines, or blogs about any topic you care to pick.
|-
|Bookmark several of these search result feeds and you've got your very own custom digital newspaper!

This article was written for Thunderbird but also applies to Mozilla Suite / SeaMonkey (though some menu sequences may differ).

How-to guide for importing calendar events & contacts into iPods

I was interested in finding a way to get Thunderbird's calendar/contact databases into Windows-based iPods. I have researched and come up with a good process to quickly do this. Below I outline separately the steps taken to import calander events and address book contact entries into your iPod.

Importing calendar data into an iPod

1. Bring up the calendar inside Thunderbird (probably also ok with Sunbird, did not try though)
2. Select ALL events in the filter window and highlight all events:
use all events filter to select everything
3. Use File->Export Selected Events command to save a file with the specific filename of iSync-Calendar.ics onto your computer
choosing export selected events from File pulldown menu
using save as to create vCalendar file iSync-Calendar.ics
4. Connect your iPod as you normally would
5. Open up your file browser and copy your saved iSync-Calendar.ics file into the iPod's Calendars folder
use Windows-XP File Manager to copy iSync-Calendar.ics to iPod
6. View your results in your iPod

Importing contacts data into an iPod

1. Get the freeware application called Dawn from Dawn's home page
(Latest version 5.3 supports exporting Thunderbird contacts)
2. Run Dawn, and use File->Open->Open Address Book command. This will bring up Dawn's dialog box of supported import databases, choose Thunderbird and your address book
Use Dawn's Open As dialog box to select Thunderbird address book
3. Dawn will display all your contacts at this point, so use the File->Save->Save As File command to save file with the specific filename of iSync.vcf to your computer, using the Save-As type Becky! Address book.
I know this is strange, but the resultant file is good for iPod - I've contacted the author about supporting iPod here as well
Use Dawn's Save->Save As command
Use Becky! save-as file type with filename of iSync.vcf
4. Connect your iPod as you normally would
5. Open up your file browser and copy your saved iSync.vcf file into the iPod's "Contacts" folder
use Windows-XP File Manager to copy iSync.vcf to iPod
6. View your results in your iPod
