As stated in the version 1.02 release notes, Thunderbird by default blocks cookies for all messages. To enable cookies, exit Thunderbird and add the following to your user.js file:

user_pref("network.cookie.cookieBehavior", 3);

Although you cannot submit a username/password through Thunderbird to sites that need a login to enable cookies for RSS, you can use your Firefox or Mozilla Suite cookies with Thunderbird. Just copy the "cookies.txt" file from your Firefox/Mozilla Suite profile folder to your Thunderbird profile folder.
