| Having the OBJ_TABS setting enabled has been known to cause the [[ActiveX]] plugin (if installed) to ignore its configuration and run any ActiveX control, instead of the controls to which it is restricted.  This could be a big security risk!

Extensions are not written by Mozilla, and they are not tested with the browser or in combination with each other. This article lists some extensions that are known to cause problems. There are hundreds of extensions, and most problems are not listed here. If you do not find the problem listed below, follow the steps outlined in the Standard diagnostic - Firefox article.

In some cases, you may need to run Firefox in a special mode called "Firefox Safe Mode" to access the Add-ons manager to disable or uninstall an extension. You may also need to reset preference changes made by the extension that may persist after it is disabled or uninstalled. See Uninstalling add-ons and Safe Mode for more information.

Extensions

Extension Extension version affected Problem Workaround References
A9 Toolbar
All Causes Unresponsive Script Warning Uninstall A9 Toolbar [1]
Adblock All Having the OBJ_TABS setting enabled has been known to cause the ActiveX plugin (if installed) to ignore its configuration and run any ActiveX control, instead of the controls to which it is restricted. This could be a big security risk! If you have the ActiveX plugin, keep the Adblock OBJ_TABS setting disabled, or update to Firefox 1.5.0.7 or later versions, which include a fix. [2] [3]
Having the OBJ_TABS setting enabled may interfere with the Java, Flash or Windows Media Player plugins. Content requiring these plugins may not display unless this setting is disabled. If updating to Adblock 0.5.3.042 or later does not resolve the issue, keep the Adblock OBJ_TABS setting disabled. [4][5] [6] [7]
Causes Google Gmail Chat to crash. ? [8]
Adblock Plus
0.7.5.2 Windows error opening Internet shortcut or local HTML file - Firefox Update to Adblock Plus version 0.7.5.3 or later [9][10]
All Triggers a bug in Firefox 2 that causes some extensions and web sites to break, most prominently Google Notebook extension Upgrade to Firefox 2.0.0.1 or later [11]

[12]

All-In-One Gestures
All versions using Firefox 2? May cause Firefox crashes. Also conflicts reported with spellchecker in Linux Mac OSX versions. [13]

[14]

All-In-One Sidebar
0.6.4 and prior New extensions will not install. Also occurs in version 0.6.4 if updated from an earlier version or if used together with the SessionSaver extension. Uninstall, then (re)install version 0.6.4. Disable opening the Extensions window in the sidebar (Misc. -> Extensions -> Open in Sidebar). [15]

[16]

Amazing Media Browser
0.17 The "Block all embedded objects" preference is set to "Yes" by default, causing embedded media normally handled by plugins to disappear, including Flash content. Also interferes with the IE Tab extension. Change the "Block all embedded objects" preference setting to "No". [17][18]
AVG Safe Search All? Problems include crashes, blocking use of ENTER from location bar, high CPU usage, and the cache being purged at shut down. Part of the "Link Scanner" component installed with AVG 8 Free Anti-Virus. Disable in Firefox via "Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions" or uninstall using these instructions. [19] [20] [21][22] [23]
DownThemAll
1.0 May cause web browsing to slow to a halt to the point that nothing loads.

Important: DownThemAll 1.0 changes certain "network.http" preferences that will need to be reset, even if you disable or uninstall the extension.
Update to version 1.0.1 and reset these preferences via about:config:
  • network.http.max-connections
  • network.http.max-connections-per-server
  • network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy
  • network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server
[24] [25] [26][27]
All (?) since 1.0 May cause Windows error opening Internet shortcut or local HTML file - Firefox If updating DownThemAll to version 1.0.2 or later does not resolve the issue, disable or uninstall the extension. [28]
external IP

All Changes made by Fasterfox can interfere with Web site access and persist after it is uninstalled. Reset options to defaults in Fasterfox before uninstalling it; otherwise, reset preferences in Firefox to the defaults (or create a new profile). [33][34]
Filterset.G Updater
Prior to 0.3.0.2 Memory leak when used in conjunction with FlashGot Update to version 0.3.0.2. [35]
Firebug
All? Causes excessive CPU usage; Firefox may hang when pop-up window is accessed, even if only to close the pop-up. Disable Firebug when you don't need to use it [36] [37]
Causes Firefox to crash on logout from Yahoo! Mail. Disable Firebug when you don't need to use it [38][39]
Firefox Google Bookmarks
Prior to 0.2.1? Interferes with spell checking in Firefox version 2. Update to version 0.2.1. If that does not work, uninstall extension. [40]
FireFTP
All? Can cause excessive CPU usage with Firefox 2.0.0.1 Update Firefox to the latest version [41]
FlashBlock

ForecastFox

[46]
Prior to version 0.9.5.1 Causes excessive CPU usage with Firefox 2.0 and Firefox 2.0.0.1 Update to Firefox 2.0.0.2 and ForecastFox 0.9.5.1 [47][48]
Google Browser Sync
All? Causes excessive CPU usage in general or with GIF animations Uninstall [49][50]
? May cause notably increased disk usage (in gigabytes) by creating large log files. May cause periodic Firefox freezes. Uninstall [51][52]
Google Toolbar (official)
? "Send with GMail" option overrides default mail client. If the Google Toolbar is uninstalled, mail links may stop working in Firefox If still installed, UNcheck "Send with GMail" in Google Toolbar Options. If uninstalled, go to about:config in Firefox, find the preference network.protocol-handler.external.mailto and reset to "true" (double-click will toggle). [53] [54]
1.0.* on windows 98, 2.0.20060404 beta and 2.0.20060515 beta Causes Unresponsive Script Warning The Google Toolbar is not compatible with Windows 95, 98, or ME. Fixed for supported OSs in latest version. [55]

ImgLikeOpera
0.6.15 "Refresh images in tab on tab select" option causes excessive CPU usage on tab change and erratic text box behavior (i.e. losing caret after selection in google search text box). Turn off "Refresh images in tab on tab select" option. [65]
Linky
2.6 Gray bar below the status bar with red arrow. Uninstall Linky. [66]
McAfee SiteAdvisor
? "onLookupFailed 55 1" alerts. Disable McAfee SiteAdvisor. [67][68]
[69]
22 Firefox may fail to open after installing or updating the SiteAdvisor extension, which also may be installed as part of a McAfee software suite. This SiteAdvisor support article describes the problem as a conflict between SiteAdvisor and automatic proxy configuration scripts in Firefox. Either follow the workaround in the SiteAdvisor support article or end the firefox process that remains in memory, start Firefox in Safe Mode and uninstall via Tools -> Extensions. If SiteAdvisor is a McAfee suite component it can also be removed using the McAfee uninstaller. [70] [71]
23 Causes Firefox to crash with an error in Jar50.dll after installing or updating the SiteAdvisor extension or McAfee component.
