Installing

To install a different dictionary for Thunderbird's spell check:

  1. With your browser, surf to either http://dictionaries.mozdev.org or http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/dictionaries.html.
  2. Download the desired language to an easy location (e.g., your Desktop).
  3. In Thunderbird go to "Tools -> Extensions" and click the "Install" button.
  4. Locate the just downloaded dictionary and let it install.
  5. Restart Thunderbird.
  6. Now you can select the new dictionary in the spell dialog.

Alternatively, you could download and install a localized build of Thunderbird, in which case all of the Thunderbird interface (and not just the dictionary) will also be in your language of choice.

Uninstalling

There is currently no way to delete an installed dictionary from within the Extensions or Spell Check dialogs, but simply deleting the dictionary's files from within the Thunderbird application seems to work. This is a "hack" solution and the results are definitely not guaranteed!

On Mac OS X the dictionaries are installed in the /Applications/Thunderbird.app/Contents/MacOS/components/myspell/ folder (assuming that Thunderbird is installed in the Applications folder). Dictionary deletion is simple:

  1. Exit Thunderbird if it is running.
  2. Navigate to the "myspell" folder either in the Finder (using the "Show Package Contents" item from the contextual menu for Thunderbird.app) or in the Terminal.
  3. Delete the offending dictionary's ".dic" and ".aff" files.

Dictionary removal on other platforms should be similar: i.e., delete the appropriate ".dic" and ".aff" files from the components\myspell directory in the Thunderbird program installation directory (not the profile folder).
