Thunderbird creates a nstmp temporary file while its compacting a folder. If you interrupt Thunderbird (crash, shutdown Thunderbird etc.) while its compacting a folder it will abort and not cleanup the temporary file. This can also occur if you're compacting a folder and you receive a new message for that folder. Thats why its sometimes recommended that you compact a folder while working offline. If this problem occurs multiple times you'll see nstmp1, nstmp2 files etc.

This bug has been fixed, but it doesn't appear to have been released yet. Check that the folder that was compacted is okay. If so, you can delete the nstmp files in your profile.
