If you have received an alert from Thunderbird (or Mozilla Suite) saying that new messages have arrived but there are no new messages in your Inbox, see if any of the following apply.

  • For IMAP accounts, if you check your email from several places using IMAP, Thunderbird displays an alert because there are messages not yet downloaded on this particular computer. However, the item will already appear as read if it's been opened elsewhere.
  • Check the points listed in Part I of this article about "disappearing" messages.
  • Sometimes a "bad" (malformed) message in an Inbox will hide the existence of messages that were downloaded after it. See related topic: the "folder is being processed" error message.
  • In some cases, an "Unable to write the email to the mailbox"-type error may be the culprit. For reference, see Bugzilla bug 166111 [1].
  • If you see a "Building summary file" message (in Thunderbird's status bar) for a long time, or if nothing else listed above seems to be the problem, try this workaround.
