Why won't this Firefox theme work in the Mozilla Suite?

The Mozilla Suite and Mozilla Firefox , though similar, use slightly different theme formats. Both programs have many themes developed for them, and some themes have program specific versions (ie, a version of a theme for the Application Suite, Firefox, etc). If you'd like to view a list of themes for the Mozilla Application Suite, visit the MozDev Themes Centre .

I upgraded Mozilla, and now the theme I use looks awful. What happened?

Only the Classic and Modern themes are automatically updated when you install a newer version of Mozilla. Occasionally Mozilla development introduces incompatibilities with themes designed for older versions of the program. If you attempt to use a theme designed for an older version of Mozilla than the one you are currently running, problems may arise, such as visual artifacts, oversized toolbars, browser instability, and startup failure. To avoid these problems, download and use themes designed specifically for the version of the Mozilla Suite you currently use. Uninstall any older themes that have been rendered incompatible by upgrading. (Uninstallation of themes can be accomplished in the themes preference dialog.)

The new extension I installed shows Modern icons in my Classic theme.

A few extensions (notably Calendar) seem to do this on first installation, but the solution is simple: Change your theme to Modern and then back to Classic. If the extension has classic image icons at all, they should be picked up as intended.

I keep getting random corruption of button images and Mozilla is unstable doing certain things.

Although the cause to many problems may be entirely unique to your situation, a general first step solution to theme corruption is to delete the XUL fastload file, where user interface files are precompiled and stored for quicker startup. Find your profile folder, and in it search for xul.mfl (on windows) or xul.fmasl (other systems). Delete this file and it will be regenerated the next time you start Mozilla.
