Mozilla will not start

This can be caused by any number of reasons (corrupt profile, incompatible extension or a computer crash). The first thing to do is to create a new profile. If not for other reasons than to make a testcase and see if the problem persists. Another thing you could do is to check your extensions. Rename the chrome folder in your profile (shut down Mozilla first). A new empty folder will be created on the next run.

If you have tried this and feel that a completely new and clean install is required this is how you should do it:

  • Backup your Profile Folder
  • Start mozilla and move any mail in incoming folders to a local folder (important)
  • Uninstall Mozilla
  • Delete the GRE directory (folder) (important)

(C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE - in Windows)

  • Delete the Mozilla installation directory (software folder)
  • Reinstall Mozilla and configure it
  • Copy the files back from your backup Profile to the new profile

(prefs.js and/or user.js should not be copied since the old paths are stored in there and if Mozilla is not working correctly, chances are that they might be corrupt)

To get your favorites/bookmarks, mail, cookies and username/password back you should copy the following files/folders:

abook.mab - addressbook

bookmarks.html - bookmarks

cookies.txt - cookies

cookperm.txt - permission, cookies

key3.db - Usernames/passwords

12345678.s - (named randomly) usernames/passwords

training.dat - trained spamfilter

<DIR> Mail - your mail

<DIR> News - your news
