Some web sites post a lot of news articles or updates which can be difficult to keep track of. While you can always visit your bookmarked sites to see the latest articles it's sometimes more convenient to have new stories sent to you automatically; more so if you have a lot of sites to keep up with. Traditionally, one way around this was via email newsletter. Live Bookmarks are a new way to automatically get the latest info you're interested about - whether it's new headlines from Yahoo News's Business section, the latest entries from your favorite blogs, or even from [http://www.mozillazine.org/ mozillaZine].

Some web sites post lots of new articles or updates and provide an easy way to keep track of them through RSS feeds. While you can always visit your bookmarked sites to see the latest articles, it's sometimes more convenient to have new stories sent to you automatically in an RSS feed. You can get the latest information that interests you this way, whether it's new headlines from Yahoo News's Business section, the latest entries from your favorite blog, or even news updates from mozillaZine. Firefox has built-in support for RSS in its "Live Bookmarks" feature.

How to add a Live Bookmark

If you are browsing a web site that has a Live Bookmark this icon: http://www.mozilla.org/images/livemarks16.png will appear at the right side of the Location Bar (or at the bottom-right of the browser window if you are using 1.0.x.)

To have Firefox watch the web site left-click the icon and select the title you are interested in - some sites have more than one. This will bring up the familiar "Add Bookmarks" dialogue. Select "OK", and you will see the Live Bookmark displayed in your Bookmarks menu. Under this entry all of the articles for that site will be displayed. Simple!

If Live Bookmarks are not detected

Some sites don't tell Firefox that they support Live Bookmarks, even though they actually do. If a site shows a small orange icon with "RSS", "RDF" or "Atom" then the icon will link to that site's Live Bookmark. You can add this manually by copying the link address then selecting "Bookmarks -> Manage Bookmarks" from the Toolbar, selecting "File -> New Live Bookmark" then choosing a name and pasting/typing in the link's address.
