This article explains how to import bookmarks into Firefox or Mozilla Suite from a file or from another browser. The imported bookmarks will be added to the current bookmarks.

Import from file

Firefox and Mozilla Suite allow you to import bookmarks from a file, using the Import feature of the Bookmarks Manager:

Mozilla Suite: "Bookmarks -> Manage Bookmarks -> Tools -> Import"
Firefox: "Bookmarks -> Manage Bookmarks -> File -> Import -> from File"

Browse to the folder containing the bookmarks file, select the file (for example, "bookmarks.html") and click "open" to import the bookmarks. The original file will remain intact and the new bookmarks will appear inside the Bookmarks Manager along with the existing bookmarks, after which you can rearrange them any way you like.

You can import a bookmarks file from a number of different sources, such as,

  • Bookmarks.html file from another Firefox or Mozilla Suite profile folder (see the linked article for locations).
  • Bookmarks.html file from a Firefox or Mozilla Suite profile backup.
  • Exported Internet Explorer bookmark.htm file saved to the desktop or other location (see below).

Import from another browser

Firefox has an Import Wizard ("File -> Import") which is capable of importing bookmarks automatically from Internet Explorer and other installed browsers. Only use the following instructions if Import Wizard doesn't work.

From Internet Explorer

On Windows, Mozilla Suite will automatically import Internet Explorer "Favorites" when first installed and whenever you create a new profile. To manually import your IE Favorites into Mozilla Suite or Firefox, first you have to export them to a file from within IE, then use the Mozilla Suite or Firefox Bookmarks Manager to import that file.

To export from IE:

  1. Run Internet Explorer.
  2. Go to "File > Import and Export...", then click Next.
  3. Select "Export Favorites", click Next, click Next again (unless you only want to export a subfolder of your Favorites, in which case, select that subfolder now).
  4. Click "Export to a File or Address", then click Browse and save the bookmarks onto your desktop. (Any file name and location will work, as long as you remember where you saved it.)
  5. Click Next, then Finish to complete the export.

After you've finished exporting your IE Favorites to a file, you can import that file using the Mozilla Suite or Firefox Bookmarks Manager Import function (see above).

From MSN Explorer

See MozillaZine Forums.

From Opera

If Firefox Import Wizard doesn't work, you can use a third-party bookmarks manager like Bookmark Converter to import your Opera bookmarks and export them back out as a HTML file. Then you can import it into Firefox.

From Safari

You need third-party software to export Safari bookmarks. Here's a tool, called Safari Bookmark Exporter (This does now work with Tiger): Versiontracker.com mirror Macupdate.com mirror
