IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a method of accessing e-mail messages on a server. Unlike POP (Post Office Protocol), where incoming messages are downloaded to your computer and are then typically deleted from the server, with IMAP your messages are stored on the server and viewed through your e-mail client, such as Thunderbird or Mozilla Suite. Whereas POP works best if you always download your mail to a single computer, IMAP is designed to let you access all of your mail—both sent and received—from more than one computer without having to transfer mail between computers to keep them synchronized.
