I'm definitely all for this page being protected. I do have a few comments though:
Locking
I'm locking the Main Page due to vandalism. If things need editing, post it here and I'll try to frequent it as much as possible to update the page or prod me in irc.mozilla.org/#wiki (if I'm away, leave a message and feel free to make faces at me).

Shouldn't there be a category listed here for information about the Mozilla Knowledge Base? Copyright notices? "About"? Rules and conventions? Help text? We could put all of this under one category -- right now it's a bit scattered around. For example, the "how to edit" and "rules" pages are linked at the top, and there's a nearly empty MozillaZine Knowledge Base:About page linked under "Appendix". (Speaking of which, some of these pages use space-colon-space, and some use a simple colon. Is this just a mistake?)

Second, I think it's confusing to have the header of the categories be a link to a separate page, not to a listing of the contents of the category. For example, the Introduction header is both a link and a category heading. I think it would be far more intuitive for users if the heading were unlinked, and the relevant links were put below. Even worse, the Intro and Intro : Summary pages that are linked in this manner are redundant, and seem to overlap. This is pretty confusing.
Bugzilla
You should put Bugzilla in under Other Mozilla.org Applications.  Better yet, replace these links with a working category feature, a la Wikipedia.  Right now, the MediaWiki:Categories page is protected and includes the exciting text "Categories" and only that.  Alternatively, Special:Categories includes a grand total of 6 different categories, none of which include that categories on the main page.  Superm401 12:30, 5 Feb 2005 (PST). : This looks promising. Any way to get categories to "embed" themselves into the front page? I want users to have a working table of contents with links to various places the moment they arrive at the front page. There's also the issue of whether or not a sysop can protect a category from inclusion, so that the sysop still has a tight rein on whether or not something appears to a user the first time he arrives here (like the protection we have on the front page right now to prevent links to any articles/links from being added).

Just managed to compile Firefox from source and I thought to put compile instructions into knowledge base. How ever, it seems that we don't have developer section around. All thought, compile instructions could go under installation instructions too...
By using the default wikimedia skin this wiki looks sadly unprofessional. By comparison with the beautifully designed MozillaZine header, the bottom part of the page seems to have simply being forced.
Wikimedia has a gallery of user styles (most of them licensed as a free document) that serves as an example of how simple changes (like the color-schema) could give more life to this knowledge base. You want to be Mozillazine, not a wikipedia looking amateur wiki.

Should we have page for developers and page for installation instructions (respectively for each product, of course)?
Cheops might give you an idea of a warmer look for this page, and MiniMenu shows the wonderful possibilities the wiki has.

Why don't you put it in firefox:hints and tips?
:Agreed, I'd love to see a better-looking style, but that depends on finding someone willing to implement it! --Mozcerize 01:01, 19 Apr 2005 (PDT)
Just add a section like:

The Mozilla Thunderbird Help link
jgraham: Can we have a Gecko section on the front page? I want to do things like "Truetype MathML fonts under Linux" which aren't app specific.
Hi,
In the section on Mozilla Thunderbird the links are 'dead'!
I think you need to change this:

Neuromancer: Re: putting it in hints and tips: doesn't really fit with the other tips. a dev category makes more sense
<p>Need more help?  Visit <a href='http://texturizer.net/thunderbird/support.html' class='external' title="http://texturizer.net/thunderbird/support.html">Mozilla Thunderbird Help</a><span class='urlexpansion'> (<i>http://texturizer.net/thunderbird/support.html</i>)</span> or browse the <a href="/Thunderbird_:_Links" title ="Thunderbird&nbsp;: Links"> Thunderbird links</a> page.
</p>

I have to say I agree with the sugestion for a developer section, there's definitely information that should be here but shouldn't be in the way of end user support rparle

Go with "Development". "Dev" is completely uninformative. Adam Conover 09:15, 20 Feb 2004 (PST)

Doesn't the subtitle completely, inform anybody about the purpose
of the page? I think Dev is a seriously cooler title than the smudgy:
developer. (cooler=better :-) Heroist

Well, "Dev" is an abbreviation, and less easy to understand than "Developers" or "Development". The point of the KB is to help people find information quickly and easily, not to be cool. In the same way, the mirrors page used to say "mirrors++" instead of "Add a mirror", which was fine as a programmer's in-joke, but was unintelligible to anyone who didn't know how to program. Adam Conover 13:14, 20 Feb 2004 (PST)

ALL hackers know how to program; LoL

I guess now it's just a case of intended audience, which coincides with the
relevance of the proposed subject.

If the audience is educated hackers, I suggest dev,
if the audience is mainstream, I suggest development.
Dev should be for educated hackers, all trivia should reside in other
categories, tips and tricks

If not, I suggest there should still be a separate category for serious dev
documentation in which in-jokes are required. That category would be dev.

Otherwise change the subtitle to developers go here

So it is not actually strange to close the dev category slightly to mainstream
audience, we do not offer cvs access on the frontpage either.

Moreover since this page is a wiki, it is very suitable for developers to
maintain some sort of documentation of their project here, since it can be updated alongside coding practice. My view of a dev category corresponds more with this type of theme then the current development idealogy. Dev should open up the mozilla
hacking to people, ofcourse with a certain threshhold.

(I would encourage even elaborate compilation instructions on the tips and tricks page
underneath something like: improve firefox performance)

Poor search engine
Is there any way to make improvements to the search engine?  If you search for a word which happens to be in the title of one or more pages then you are taken straight to one of those pages and so are unable to see any other search results.
For example, searching for "password" takes you straight to Firefox_:_FAQs_:_Master_password_settings so that you can't see other search results such as Thunderbird_:_FAQs_:_Set_a_Master_Password. Wildhart 08:40, 20 Feb 2004 (PST)

LoL, you just have to click Search  instead of go   Heroist

I propose adding a Marketing (or Evangelism, or ...?) section. Yes? Title?

Further, if we do add such a section, I propose starting it off with a transfer of content from http://wiki.mozdev.org:8080/cgi-bin/mozdev-wiki.pl?ProjectMarketing. This was something I began developing a while back, then life intervened. No?
