This article deals with what to do if Firefox/Mozilla Suite will not connect to any websites. You may receive messages such as "This document contains no data" and "The connection was refused when attempting to contact...". If Firefox/Mozilla Suite can successfully load some websites but not others, read this article.

First steps

  • As with anything else, the problem may go away once you reboot your system.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet. To make Firefox/Mozilla Suite autoconnect when it starts, see this article.
  • Make sure that File -> Work Offline is not checked.

Only Firefox/Mozilla Suite is having problems

If Firefox/Mozilla Suite can't connect and other programs such as Internet Explorer can...

Connection Settings

Make sure your connection settings are correct. If you have Internet Explorer and it works, compare Internet Explorer's connection settings to those of Firefox (Tools -> Options -> General -> Connection Settings) or Mozilla Suite (Edit -> Preferences -> General -> Connection Settings).

Firewalls

Any firewall you have must be configured to allow Firefox/Mozilla Suite access. Most firewalls will ask you whether to allow a program to connect to the Internet. It's important that you always grant Firefox/Mozilla Suite access. If you deny access, you must go into the firewall's configuration program and re-allow access. Even when disabled, some firewalls deny access.

Here is some firewall-specific information:

Norton Internet Security

NIS has a bug where an update to Firefox/Mozilla Suite will automatically block that program from accessing the Internet. This is a very common problem. Read these step-by-step configuration instructions.

Outpost Firewall

Make sure the Rules Wizard firewall policy is on.

Sygate Firewall

Some firewalls (e.g. Sygate) block ICMP traffic by default. There are times when your computer needs to exchange ICMP type 3 and type 4 data with the gateway, and if that traffic is blocked, you will get web timeouts and failed ftp uploads.

To unblock it in Sygate, see This post.

Windows Firewall

Try removing Firefox/Mozilla Suite from Windows Firewall's exceptions list, and re-adding it.

  1. Close Firefox/Mozilla Suite
  2. Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Windows Firewall
  3. General tab - Make sure the firewall is switched on and "Don't allow exceptions" is unchecked.
  4. Exceptions tab - Find the Firefox/Mozilla Suite entry and delete it.
  5. Check the box next to "Display a notification when Windows Firewall blocks a program".
  6. Click "OK" to exit the Windows Firewall window.
  7. Start Firefox/Mozilla Suite.
  8. Windows Firewall should then ask whether you want to keep blocking or unblock. Select "Unblock".

ZoneAlarm

Some versions of ZoneAlarm have issues with Firefox/Mozilla Suite. Make sure you are using the latest version.

When you need to allow access after saying "Deny", try opening the Zone Alarm Control Center, Selecting Program Control on the Left, Programs on the top, Finding Firefox (or Thunderbird or Mozilla) in that list and changing the Access Internet (Red)X or (Blue)? to a (Green) √ Check Mark.

If that doesn't work, try Right Clicking on the Firefox entry in the Control Center and selecting Remove. The next time you access Firefox, ZA should ask you if you want to allow access or not.

For other ZoneAlarm issues, see this article

Other Software

Panda Anti-Virus

Older versions of Panda Anti-virus can cause connection problems. Read this.

Other Solutions

  • It may be a problem with IPv6. Here are the steps to disable IPv6 (if this doesn't work, re-enable it).
    1. Type about:config in the address bar, press Enter
    2. Find network.dns.disableIPv6.
    3. Right-click -> Toggle
    4. Restart Firefox/Mozilla Suite and try again.
  • Try the standard diagnostic.

All programs are having problems

Router

A recently installed router can cause problems. Contact your system administrator or refer to your router's documentation. If possible, see if you can connect without hooking up to the router.

DNS

If your domain name server (DNS) becomes overloaded, you may be unable to view some or all Web sites. Your DNS translates Web addresses (URLs) that you enter in Firefox, into IP addresses that are used by the Internet. The DNS is usually provided by your Internet service provider. Here is a discussion of the problem, with information on what you can do about it.

Windows sometimes caches unsuccessful DNS lookup attempts, and this means that you may not be able to view one or more sites for a while. This is a Windows problem as well as a DNS problem, and it affects all Internet programs. As a workaround, you can flush the cache. (For Windows XP, "Start -> Run -> ipconfig /flushdns", then try loading the Web site again.) You can find more information here.

ISP

If programs other than Firefox/Mozilla Suite are having problems connecting, the problem may be with your Internet Service Provider. Contact them.

Software

Trend Micro Anti-Virus

If you haven't updated your pattern file since April 2005 and suffer from 100% CPU utilization, read this.

Spyware/Adware

Use programs such as Ad-Aware or Spybot-S&D to scan your computer for malware.
