This article describes why the clipboard (Cut, Copy, Paste) may not work.

Malware

New.net

New.net is malware that installs itself on Windows machines as a Firefox extension when certain other applications are installed onto the system. New.net is meant to allow the user to access new.net-specific addresses, but it also interferes with the clipboard. It can't be uninstalled from within Firefox.

Removing New.net

New.net provides a removal tool. It can also be removed with anti-spyware programs such as Spybot or Microsoft Anti-Spyware.

Applications that bundle New.net

  • RealNetworks (RealOne Player)
  • Babylon
  • BikiniDesk
  • Cydoor (LingoWare)
  • gDivx
  • Go!Zilla
  • Grokster
  • iMesh
  • KaZaA
  • Mindset Interactive (NetPalNow)"
  • Mp3.com
  • RadLight / Subtitle Studio
  • UK Software
  • Webshots

pushow

"pushow" (pop up show) affects the clipboard in Firefox. [1] Infected computers have a file named popupshow.dll or pushowxx.dll (where xx is a random number), normally in C:\Windows\System32\. To see if you have been infected by this malware, perform Windows searches for pushow* and popupshow.dll, making sure that you have the "Show hidden files/folders" option on. If you find these files, delete them. pushow may not be detected by your scanning software, even if if your definitions are up to date. [2]

Rich text editors

If Copy/Paste doesn't work only in rich text editors (such as those used by GMail or Yahoo! Mail), read this article.

Mozilla and Windows bugs

One workaround to restore may restore clipboard functionality is to minimize the application.

Microsoft Remote Desktop

Using Microsoft Remote Desktop can break the copy/paste feature. Shutting down the remote desktop restores the functionality.[3]
