HOW TO SET UP THUNDERBIRD FOR AOL - UPDATED FOR VERSION 1.5

Open Thunderbird 1.5

Select "Tools" > "Account Settings". On the “Account Settings” Panel Press "Add Account". Choose "Email Account" then Press "Next".

Type in your “Name” how you want it to be displayed to the recipient. Type in your Return Email Address, how you want it displayed.

Press "Next". Select "IMAP".

Type the correct AOL incoming server address for your country:-

imap.aol.com (For AOL in the USA) imap.uk.aol.com (For AOL in the United Kingdom) (Other Countries IMAP Servers are listed below)

Press "Next".

Type your "User Name" then press "Next".

Give this account a name, by typing it in.

Press "Next".

Check the information displayed is correct, then press “Finish”

DO NOT CHECK YOUR MAIL YET !!!!

IMPORTANT !

Go back into the “Account Settings” Panel.

On the left-hand side of this panel, below the Email accounts and Local Folders, select "Outgoing Server (SMTP) settings".

On the right hand side, Press "Add".

Change the Port Number to > "587"

Type your "User Name" where it asks. In "Server name", type the correct AOL SMTP “Server Name” for your country.

smtp.aol.com (For AOL in USA) smtp.uk.aol.com ( For AOL in UK) (other countries -See below).

Press "OK".

Now, still with the “Account Settings” window open, on the left-side, select the first line of settings in your AOL account. This should just have the name you gave to the account it, and will have a small “-“, or “+”, to the left of it, dependant on whether the settings are expanded or collapsed). The page on the right should say Account Setting <account>.

2/3rds of the way down is “Outgoing Server (SMTP)” To the right is a Drop-Down Options List – Press the “v” to see the options.

Choose your AOL STMP Server

DO NOT PRESS OK YET. STILL A BIT MORE.

With the “Account Settings” window still open, notice on your left-hand, to spaces below the AOL account settings button you pressed, there is one called “Copies and Folders”. There is a “Copies and Folders” for each email account, so make sure you have the AOL one.

Press AOL “Copies and Settings”.

On the right page, Either “turn off” “Save copies of sent to”, or change the destination to Local folders, but make sure your destination folder is NOT in an IMAP or AOL account.

This will avoid a possible error message, whilst sending AOL mail, telling you that the messages sent could "not be saved to the AOL Sent folder". Infact, the sent mail is already on the AOL server but requies a refresh or pressing Check mail to see it. Thunderbird was trying to repeat the task, and in the Thunderbird way. If would turn off save to sent mail myself unless I was using Global SMTP, then I would redirect to another Non-IMAP folder.

Do the same with “Drafts” and “Templates” folders, ensuring the destination is NOT in an IMAP or AOL folder.

I personally leave the “Show confirmation Dialogue when messages are saved” off. These “Copies and Folders” settings may be advisable for most IMAP accounts.)See also:- http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=456630
