If you've tried setting up Thunderbird and find that you cannot send mail for one or more of your accounts, below are some things that you can try to take care of the problem.

First, if you are using a firewall, make sure that it is not set to block Thunderbird.

Next, make sure that you know the correct settings for your outgoing server (SMTP). You'll need to get these from your email service provider; usually you can find them on your service provider's homepage. A Google search for the name of your email service provider plus the word "smtp" -- for example, "SoftHome smtp" (both words, without the quote marks) -- will usually direct you to the information you need.

Now check your settings in Thunderbird as described below. For your default outgoing server, these settings will all be accessed by going to Tools | Account Settings, and then clicking on "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" at the bottom of the left pane (you may need to scroll down). For a non-default/secondary outgoing server: do the same but also click on the Advanced button, select the appropriate server from the list, and click on the Edit button.

  • Where it says "Server Name," make sure that the SMTP server name is entered correctly. Check carefully for typing errors: for instance, make sure that you didn't mistype "smpt" for "smtp" or that you didn't accidentally type a comma for a period.
  • Try unchecking the box for "Use name and password." Your email service provider might not support this kind of authentication.
  • If you do need to use SMTP authentication, make sure that the box for "Use name and password" is checked and that you have entered your correct username for the account. Your username in this case may be either your full email address (such as "JohnDoe@RandomEmailProvider.com") or just the part before the "@" mark ("JohnDoe"), depending on your email service provider.
  • Unless your email service provider supports SSL connections for outgoing mail, make sure that where it says "Use secure connection", the SSL button is not selected.
  • If you receive an error message that says "Relay access denied" or "Relaying denied," even after making sure that the box for "Use name and password" is checked and that you have entered your correct username for the account, you may need to use a different SMTP server for the account.
