Anchor elements in HTML can specify a target attribute that determines where the link is opened. If the value is _blank or _new, the link will open in a new window, which can be irritating for users not expecting it.

The preference browser.target_new_blocked was created to prevent this from happening (and redirect those links into the current window). It was later renamed to browser.block.target_new_window (this preference). This preference, in turn, was superseded by the effects of
