In some cases, this can be caused by one of the index files for the mail files being corrupted.
# Exit Thunderbird
# Exit Thunderbird.
# Find your [[Profile_Folder]]
# Find your [[profile folder]].
# Open the "Local Folders" folder
# Open the folder containing your stored messages. For instance, if you are using the [[Global Inbox]], this would be the "Local Folders" folder inside the "Mail" folder.
# Menu "View", select "Details"
# Select all .msf files—these are the index files—and delete them.
# Click the "Type" tab at the top of the window
# Restart Thunderbird.
# Select all .MSF files - these are the indexes
# Wait for Thunderbird to recreate the indexes.

Symptoms

In Windows, Thunderbird is not responding. It may also be using 100% of the processing power.

Solution

In some cases, this can be caused by one of the index files for the mail files being corrupted.

  1. Exit Thunderbird.
  2. Find your profile folder.
  3. Open the folder containing your stored messages. For instance, if you are using the Global Inbox, this would be the "Local Folders" folder inside the "Mail" folder.
  4. Select all .msf files—these are the index files—and delete them.
  5. Restart Thunderbird.
  6. Wait for Thunderbird to recreate the indexes.
