Verizon provides thier customers email accounts using either Verizon.net or Yahoo.com mail servers. The main difference in the Yahoo accounts that they provide (compared to free Yahoo accounts) is that the POP server uses port 996 instead of port 995, the SMTP server uses port 466 instead of port 465 and they require the entire email address as the username.

Create a new account by pressing the Add Mail Account button in Tools -> Account Settings -> Account Actions. It should create a POP account and configure it to use the corresponding SMTP server. If your email address ends in verizon.net it will use the Verizon.net mail servers, if it ends in yahoo.com it will use the yahoo mail servers.

If your Yahoo email address is going to be discontinued and you are told to switch to the Verizon.NET mail servers it is recommended that you create a new account and copy the already downloaded messages to it rather than modifying the existing account. This is a little more work but avoids several potential problems such as your old mail disappearing due to the local directory setting changing.

If you don't want to rely upon the account wizard to configure the account for you (or need to fix an error):

Advanced

Verizon wireless supports IMAP accounts for smartphones. Its not known whether you can configure Thunderbird to use the same settings, like you can with free Yahoo webmail accounts.

Verizon.NET supports adding up to 8 sub-accounts. Since they have thier own username and password they are normal accounts as far as Thunderbird is concerned. Thunderbird has no concept of sub-account or secondary accounts , or that it is associated with your "main email account".
