User talk:WelmFrom MozillaZine Knowledge BaseIn Excel there is a File menu choice to email the current document as an attachment. When this is done, using Thunderbird as the email application, the attachment is assigned the suffix .tmp (rather than .xls). This means that the attachment will not automatically open in Excel. I can think of three ways around this problem: -Save the Excel document, then create the attachment along with the email message in Thunderbird. -The recipient can save the attachment, right-click on it, and tell it to open in Excel. -The recipient can set control panel options to show suffixes, then manually edit the suffix. The last two options require some time and computer knowledge on the part of the recipient. Questions: -Why does Thunderbird assign a .tmp suffix to an attachment created this way? -Is there a way to change this, so that the correct suffix is assigned? Thanks for any help on this one! --welm [edit] My AnswerIt's always better to ask questions in the forum where people might actualy notice you. The reason would be that Excel probably creates a temporary file so there is no loss from on-screen informaion to recieved file and to avoid folder privacy issues. I cannot think of a way round this without some kind of hack or mod to either of those programs. I meerly suggest to do it the old fashioned way - Save the file then make a new e-mail and put it as an attatchment. --Stex 15:07, 31 May 2005 (PDT) |
