Reset system Internet security settings - Windows

The advice given in the section "Reset system Internet security settings - Windows" is to reset all Windows Internet Options Security zones to the default level. Although this advice works, it makes IE significantly more vulnerable to attack. I suggest that we change the advice to find Security zones that are on the High security setting and reduce them to the Medium-High security setting. This will keep IE more secure, and is consistent with the advice in the Internet Explorer article. -- schapel 17:16, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

I changed the article section to reset just the Internet zone to "Medium-High", which is the default level for IE7. The security level for Restricted Sites is "High" by default and you shouldn't reduce that zone to a lower level. There's a note about restricted sites at the end of the section. In my tests, I found that the issue of Firefox 3 not being able to save EXE files due to setting the IE Security Zone to High only occurred on Windows XP. On both Vista and Windows 7, Firefox was able to save EXE files even with the Security Zone set at High. Thanks for the information. Quarantine reported here, https://support.mozilla.com/forum/3/579542 .... that on Windows 7, setting "Launching applications and unsafe files" to "Disable" causes downloads to fail in Firefox 3.6 (regardless of the about:config setting). On Windows XP, if I set Internet Options security to High in the Internet Zone, that sets "Launching applications and unsafe files" to "Disable". From what you are saying, I gather that this is not the case on Windows 7/Vista? Alice 03:35, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
In any case, I've edited the article section to put the emphasis on the crucial setting, "Launching applications and unsafe files". I've also added a link to your computerworld.com blog post as a reference. Alice 11:54, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
