I think that article needs more options:

Changing window focus like pressing F1 to open help and closing that window might be easier (that seems to work according to people who tried it, also for the copy/paste problem). A workaround by changing the timeout.

Are there known extensions that causes that behavior? (can't remember if i've seen reports about that)

Noticed a reference to an extension to change the hotkeys: http://nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/index-en.html#searchkeys

Are you sure this works? When I try this, the search box opens for about half a second. Will someone still be able to type an apostrophe in a text box?

Is there any problem with just telling people to minimize or change tabs? Does this fail to work for some people? It's hard to get info on a bug you can't duplicate.

AnotherGuest, I wasn't sure what you meant by Are you sure this works? When I try this.... Are you talking about the workaround given in the article or the alternate workaround posted above? I don't experience this bug either but I don't see anything wrong in having multiple workarounds in the article, especially if they are easier than the given workaround (switching focus to another program, then back to Firefox) or if the given workaround doesn't work in all cases. If your suggestion (minimize or change tabs) or dickvl's (changing the window focus by pressing F1 to open Help, then closing that window) also works, why not add it, possibly along with a reference link? This forum post (same topic as dickvl's post) suggests opening and closing an "About" window from the Help menu. Alice Wyman 11:17, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
P.S. The bug report that is referenced in the article gives other possible workarounds Alice Wyman 11:43, 21 June 2006 (UTC)
Normally I'm opposed to adding multiple solutions when only one works, but there's really only one solution here (change the focus away from the page) that you can do multiple different ways. I wouldn't be opposed to saying "One workaround is to switch focus away from the current page (by switching tabs, focusing another window, etc.)".--Np 14:33, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

I was referring to reducing the timeout. This has been advocated many times as a workaround. As mentioned above, when I tried it, I didn't see how it could work (however, I did not experience the bug at the time, so I couldn't really test it). During the brief time when I occasionally experienced the bug, switching tabs solved the problem. Unless there is evidence that switching focus does not always work, it's nice to keep just that simple solution in here.
On the other hand, if someone can provide evidence or anecdotes that DickVl's suggestion actually does work, it definitely ought to be included. (I'm too lazy to search.)--AnotherGuest.

Removed reference to a promised patch. That has long since come and gone, but the problem persists for some, up to the current version 2.0.0.11. According to the tracking bug, there are many causes. I'm not aware of much activity on this bug any more.--AnotherGuest. 14:46, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
