Talk:Determine extension ID

Some conventions you might not be aware of as a new editor.

1. All articles should be added to at least one category so that they can also be found by browsing a listing of the articles in a category. In this case the most appropriate choice might be to add [[Category:Configuration]] to the bottom of that page.

Note: I used the NoWiki tag (W with a red circle/slash button) to disable the wiki from applying that string to this page. If you add it to the KB article it will automatically effect this talk page.

2. The majority of users use Windows, so it would help if there was some automated suggestion for them too. Even if you have to resort to suggesting they install win-bash or cygwin to get bash support.

One possibility might be to install the extension locally and then use an add-on that either displays that information or explicitly supports copying and pasting it using an added menu command. See if Mr Tech Toolkit or Nightly Tester Tools for example supports that. They're popular. The About:Support add-on lists the extension ids and supports copying and pasting that information. Its a new experimental add-on whose features will eventually be built into Thunderbird, so it might be the best choice.

3. You need to be careful not to over do it, but its a good idea when you create a new article to see if there are one or two related articles that you might want to alert the user to, and vice versa. Anybody who finds this article useful is likely to have either read Configuration utilities for administrators or be interested in those remote configuration/deployment tools. I suggest you add a link to this article in its See also section, and vice versa.

I noticed that you added some Linux/Unix specific text in Installing extensions linking to this article. I suggest you replace that with a link in See also. That way if somebody else edits this article to add Windows or OSX support there is no need to update that articles text too.
