I added your name to your post. Please don't make anonymous comments. I've seen several users have this problem with Thunderbird 3.1.*

[1] is an extreme example. The user was converting thousands of email folders from POP to IMAP, with some of them having 32,000+ messages. He gave up trying to upload them because it was too unreliable. He's currently looking into installing a local IMAP server so that he can reliably upload them to that, and then use utilities to move messages between IMAP servers.
