I think a lot here is still it is quite disputable that 64bit thunderbird any detectable or usable performance improvement. therefore "preferred in order to increase performance" would seem to be misleading

I removed the outdated statement about Enigmail. My impression is that many users who want a 64-bit version believe that it will provide them better performance. Almost a third of the article is devoted to trying to lower their expectations. I've added a paragraph with a link to two benchmark articles and tweaked the wording in the "Typically you only want to use a 64 bit version" sentence. Tanstaafl 19:01, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
