Start Page for mail

From MozillaZine Knowledge Base

This article applies to Thunderbird and to SeaMonkey Mail.

Thunderbird or SeaMonkey Mail can display a designated Start Page in the preview pane when starting up. This can be changed in the options/preferences menu, or by setting mailnews.start_page.enabled true and specifying what you want it to display in mailnews.start_page.url.

mailnews.account_central_page.url is a related setting that can be used to replace account central (the pane displayed when you click on the account name in the folder pane) with an image or the contents of a web page. See Mail and news settings for more information on it.

Turning off the Start Page display

In Thunderbird: go to "Tools -> Options -> General", and then in the section labeled "Thunderbird Start Page" uncheck the box for "When Thunderbird launches, show the Start Page in the message area."

In SeaMonkey: go to "Edit -> Preferences -> Mail & Newsgroups", and then in the section labeled "Mail Start Page" uncheck the box for "When Mail launches, show the Start Page in the message area."

Changing the Start Page

Instead of displaying the default Start Page, you can instead have Thunderbird or SeaMonkey display your own custom-made start page, such as an HTML file or JPG image. You can also use a about protocol link such as about:about.

In Thunderbird: go to "Tools -> Options -> General" and check the box for "When Thunderbird launches, show the Start Page in the message area." Then, in the "Location" dropdown, select the page you wish to display.

In SeaMonkey: go to "Edit -> Preferences -> Mail & Newsgroups" and check the box for "When Mail launches, show the Start Page in the message area." Then, in the "Location" box, enter the correct location for the file you want to use as the Start Page.

It is crucial that you correctly specify the location of the file you want to use for the Start Page, and the syntax may be different from what you are familiar with. For instance, in Windows, if your Start Page file is located at C:\Documents and Settings\myusername\StartPage.html, you need to enter this in the "Location" box as file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/myusername/StartPage.html. You should be able to get the correct syntax for the file location by entering file: in the Location Bar in Firefox or SeaMonkey, browsing to the file, and then copying the file location from the Location bar.

The built-in start page

Thunderbird's and SeaMonkey's built-in start page is: chrome://messenger/content/start.xhtml

The default start page is a web page that depends on the language version, your operating system, and the version of the application. For example, https://live.mozillamessaging.com/%APP%/start?locale=%LOCALE%&version=%VERSION%&os=%OS%&buildid=%APPBUILDID% is remapped to https://live.mozillamessaging.com/thunderbird/start?locale=en-US&version=10.0.2&os=WINNT&buildid=20120216022751 if you are using the US English version of Thunderbird 10.0.2 under Vista.

Redisplay the start page

The start page in Thunderbird will be replaced with the messages contents if you select a message in the folder listing. ALT+Home will redisplay the start page in the preview pane.
