Background

In Firefox and Thunderbird, this preference sets the spell checker’s current language or locale—for example: en-US (US English) or fr (French). It also corresponds to the file name of the word list used by the spell checker—for example: en-US.dic or fr.dic.

Possible values and their effects

The spell checker’s current language or locale. Default value varies by localization.

Mozilla Firefox 2.0

In Firefox you can choose the spelling checker’s language in a text area’s context menu.

Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0

In Thunderbird you can choose the spelling checker’s language in: “Options (Preferences) → Composition → Spelling → Language”. Alternatively, you can choose it in the Compose window: “Options → Check Spelling... → Language”.
