Mozilla applications are regularly updated for security and stability; however, Mozilla does not provide updates for plug-ins. Plug-ins can cause crashes and hangs and may contain security vulnerabilities. Information on security and stability issues affecting RealPlayer is available at Real's website.

Windows users have two choices for playing RealMedia: the official Real Player or the ad-free Real Alternative. Both will work in Firefox and Mozilla Suite, but Real Alternative version 1.32 or later has the advantage of including a "modified plugin" that overcomes a problem with incorrect coding on certain webpages containing embedded Real media, as explained here.

Installation

Remove any older versions which may be on your system.
Download the Real Player or Real Alternative installer.
Close all instances of Firefox or Mozilla Suite and any other unnecessary programs.
Run the setup program.
If installing Real Alternative, make sure that the "Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape/Opera Plugin" is checked when selecting which components to install.

Testing

After the Player installation is complete, start Firefox/Mozilla Suite and enter about:plugins into the Category:Location Bar. "RealPlayer(tm) G2 LiveConnect-Enabled Plug-In (32-bit)" and should be listed. You can test your player here. If you're testing Real Player 10.5 and get a "missing plugin" alert, you'll need to install the modified plugin (see below).

Plugin not recognized

If you install Firefox or Mozilla Suite after having installed RealPlayer and the Real Player plugin is not recognized, you will need to copy these two files:

Copy "nppl3260.xpt" from C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\Netscape6\nppl3260.xpt to the Mozilla Firefox or Mozilla Suite installation directory "components" folder
Copy "nppl3260.dll" from C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\Netscape6\nppl3260.dll to the Mozilla Firefox or Mozilla Suite installation directory "plugins" folder.

An alternate method would be to reinstall RealPlayer.

Plugin present but still get Missing Plugin Alert

The plug-in included with Real Player 10.5 only lists the .rpm file type (Real Player playlist) since the proper way to embed Real Media is to list the files to be played in a playlist file and play that. If the file to be played is not a .rpm file or if the type attribute is not specified as "audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin" in the html embed or object tag, ra, rm and ram file types will not play.

Modified plugin

The modified plugin is a work-around for this specific problem. Instead of relying solely on the "audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin" mime type, the plugin recognizes the additional Real Media file types, enabling pages missing the type attribute to function. Real Alternative includes the modified plug-in file, so if you use that this step is not needed.

Important: The modified plugin works with Real Player 10.5 only - it will not work correctly with newer or older versions.

Download the modified Real Player Plug-In to a convenient location such as your desktop: >>nppl3260.zip<< (Alternate Download: >>nppl3260.zip<<)
Close Firefox
Navigate to the Mozilla Firefox or Mozilla Suite installation directory "plugins" folder.
Back up the existing nppl3260.dll file.
- Right click in an empty location of the window and select "New > Folder".
- Name the newly created folder "Backup".
- Left click and Drag nppl3260.dll into the new folder.
Extract the modified nppl3260.dll from the ZIP file downloaded in the first step.
Drag the modified nppl3260.dll into the plugins folder.
Start Firefox

Vanishing Controls

The Windows Plugin for Firefox had a problem whereby after using a control button it would vanish. If you are still experiencing this you should install the latest version of RealPlayer. You may also then need to follow the manual steps described above to apply the fix.
