Category talk:View Source

I'm not convinced that View Source should be a category at the top level of the Firefox heirarchy. It has a far higher level of specificity than the other categories at that level, such as Profile, Bookmarks etc. I suggest either turning it into a single article called View Source, or making it a subcategory of Preferences, seeing as its articles are all about:config preferences articles. --Mozcerize 08:53, 1 December 2005 (UTC)

The reason this is far more specific than other categories is that no one has bothered to make categories for other features yet. The idea is to provide a category for a short description of the feature, preferences related to that feature, and issues pertaining to that feature (people will be more apt to find Firefox -> Feature -> Issue rather than Firefox -> Issues -> Issue). It's also much easier and nicer to fit articles into a category than to cross link sets of articles. I've asked the question on Location Bar whether we should turn that into a category too, and the same would apply to Tabbed browsing.--Np 15:41, 1 December 2005 (UTC)
This is the first I've heard of this proposal. Given that it's a departure from the original vision of the category structure, I think it would be good to start a discussion on the Talk:Rules/Categories page. Although that page is lengthy, it gives good background on how the current category tree was devised and on how the corresponding Rules came about. This provides useful heads-up when thinking about future changes. (I have temporarily removed the View Source category from the Firefox Category because I think that having such a specific topic sitting next to such general concepts as Profile and Extensions currently makes for a pretty confusing user experience. The Firefox Category is the first "real content" part of the KB that most users see, and I think that we should keep the immediate subcategories nice and general so that the user doesn't have to work too hard (i.e. read too many links) to narrow his search, at least until there's a concencus among the editors interested in the category structure. --Mozcerize 09:28, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
"Don't forget that Issues is a view, so an article in Issues should also be placed in another, semantic, category where possible." "It was decided that editors should be expressly encouraged---even mandated---to place any article which is an Issue into both the Issues category /and/ a semantic category such as Extensions, Installation and update, Configuration etc" I'll toss this over to Talk:Rules/Categories. --Np 17:41, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
Someone brought to my attention that this category (which contains 4 preferences articles right now) is uncategorized. I'm adding it to Category:Preferences as suggested above by Mozcerize. Alice 15:45, 27 December 2007 (UTC)
Category:Websites seems to fit better now, based on the recent edit to the category page by User:Dmcritchie. Alice 22:30, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
